Treating Gum Recession Proactively

Gum Grafting

Gum graft surgery is a dental procedure for treating thinning gums and gum recession. Gum grafting covers exposed teeth roots and adds volume to your gums to repair the recession defect and to prevent future recession. Dr. Tatum utilizes a specialized minimally invasive technique to give your gums the best possible chance of regaining health.

What to Expect

Numb the area. This is to ensure your comfort .

Prepare the site. Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Tatum will thoroughly clean your teeth roots and then create a small space beneath the gums for the graft.

Prepare the gum graft. Dr. Tatum uses a graft material called AlloDerm that is from a highly controlled human tissue bank. Using this technique, Dr. Tatum completely avoids having to take your own tissue from the roof of your mouth, which is the traditional method. This greatly enhances comfort. Prior to graft placement, Dr. Tatum soaks the graft in an antimicrobial and high-powered growth factor medium.

Place the gum graft. Next, Dr. Tatum places the gum graft in the prepared space underneath the gums.

Place sutures. Finally, Dr. Tatum repositions your gum tissue and fixes it into place using sutures. These sutures will be removed after your healing period.
