Crowns

Made from a variety of materials, a dental crown can give a damaged tooth a second chance at a long life. Dr. Tatum or Dr. Austin will choose a crown solution based on your specific dental needs. We only use the highest quality dental ceramics to ensure the most life-like and strong restoration possible.

Crowns are one of the most common treatments our patients trust us to provide them.

Why a Dental Crown?

A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth (for instance, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth

  • To restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down

  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn't enough tooth left to maintain long-term structural integrity

  • As part of a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth

  • To cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth

  • To restore a dental implant

  • To make a cosmetic modification

Are Dental Crowns Painful?

Thankfully, placing a dental crown is typically not a painful experience. Your tooth, and the area around your tooth, will be numbed before the procedure to keep you comfortable. If you do experience tenderness after your visit you can take your instructed pain medication as needed. Any tenderness or soreness in the area typically subside within a few days if not the day after your treatment.

How Long Will a Dental Crown Last?

With proper care, dental crowns last an average of 10 to 15 years, however, at Austin & Tatum Dental our goal and expectation is that our crowns will last you decades, if not the rest of your life if it is well taken care of. There are several factors to keep in mind that may impact the long-term success of your dental crown. Things like personal daily oral hygiene, grinding and tooth wear patterns, and routine professional dental care all play a role in extending your crown’s lifespan.
